The Basis for this Service

In the Old Testament a service of presentation to the Lord was part of the Jewish rite. Christ himself was presented to the Lord in the Temple. In each case, the real presentation is that of parents, but the ritual involves the child because he is the one presented.

“And she said, Oh my Lord, as they soul liveth, my Lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the Lord. For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of Him; therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:26-28

“And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And He took them up in His arms, put His hands upon them, and blessed them.” Mark 10:13-16

“And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought Him (Jesus) to Jerusalem, to present Him to the Lord.” Luke 2:22
